Level 2 sites
A network of sites has been proposed in 2018, and new sites are under selection, for core monitoring. These are the “Level 2” sites of the National Ecosystem Monitoring Network, currently in design.
Bogs
Bogs will be monitored for effects of air pollution, especially the nutrient enrichment effects of nitrogen deposition from the atmosphere, especially ammonia and its products from agricultural sources in Ireland. This off-colour Cladonia lichen may be the kind of thing that will be recorded.
Semi-natural Grasslands
Continuing habitat surveys by National Parks and Wildlife Service, and contributing to Article 17 reporting under the Habitats Directive.
Lakes
Lakes sensitive to acidification and eutrophication from atmospheric nitrogen deposition will be monitored, continuing work under the Water Framework Directive.
